Pinus virginiana backbudding

Doesn't seem to be used much, but I took an afternoon walk to our local P. virginiana stand. Beautiful trees, not really conveyed by my photography. They look something of a red pine, and the older trees have lovely bark. Couldn't help noticing the prolific sprouting on this trunk.

(Apparently pitcher plants grow here too, but I've never found one.)

Does anyone here work with this species? Is it worth looking for seeds? These trees are probably uncollectible, growing on top of (pretty wet) sand.

The needle length and the epicormic growth makes me think those are pitch pine, P. rigida. They make pretty decent bonsai material if you can find a trunk with some age and character.

I believe you might be correct: this tree has needles in triplets and not pairs, as well as being a bit long. The trees in the first pic are virginiana, however- at least according to the sign! (under the roof)

Look in lower elevations with standing water. They need a whole lot of water and nutrient poor soils, preferably acidic.
