Greetings,

Just wondering if this was effective mulch for the winter season? I picked up this barrel today as well which I love. As a former drinker it served a purpose in that respect. Yes, I drilled some holes on the bottom. I’m considering this is a start to a build out of a bonsai garden, one day. My hope as the passion and practice develops to erect a sun shade as I’ve seen so many others do before me. But I’m not adept at such things either.

You will want to protect the trees from the wind which can dry them out if the roots get frozen. I would set the apparatus on the ground and you will gain a few degrees. You are just a little bit north of me so this should work. It looks like you have a pomengranate in there--they are somewhat less cold hardy than the rest and I would make sure it is all the way sunk into the mulch

No pomegranate. Boxwood, junipers, Japanese black pine.

Probably just fine, set the whole tray on the ground against the house and water every few days if it doesn’t rain.
Would you use polyurethane on the barrels? Im hoping to get a few in place, similar to this build.

No. Pretty sure Bjorn left his natural, and they aged well for several years. Here was my last trip there so you have a sense of how they looked.
