Piñon pine #2

A very natural ensemble, well done 👍

I wonder if it would be worth adding a plant (dwarf fern, grass etc) or a small bushy shrub (cotoneaster/elm etc) to counterbalance the greenery on the opposite side where the tree leans ? 🤔

Not a bad idea Clem. Especially once I wire the tree out more horizontally than it already is. Something at the base of the tree could help ground the composition a bit more.

I second Clem’s suggestion. It would add some counterbalance to the composition without changing the cantilevered look of the tree.

could probably use a bit more of an old needle clean up. I put some wire on this tree though. I also hacked back the wild yarrow, exposing the pussytoes. Thinking I may put this tree in an actual pot come spring.

I may not though, in order to let this tree gain vigor, considering it was just planted in this container this year.

Thoughts?

Personally, I quite like the current planting. I wouldn’t mind seeing it in a pot, but I would expect something a little less formal than the lotus you mocked up.

I think you’re probs right. Needs to settle in for a few years anyways before I make another repot decision.

I'm with Will, love the slab the whole composition is coming together nicely, as you know I prefer this orientation, and reining in the yarrow really helps the scale and proportions

Yeah cutting that yarrow back made a huge difference. I need to pluck that out of the pot next spring at the very least.

For me, considering the literati style of your pine, i think the lotus pot is too big, too deep.
A pot like these would be better, IMHO ->468214566_1128749642588616_9048041270831972550_n.jpg

For me the actual shell is even better than those pots because it makes a wild landscape 👍

I think it looks great in the current slab, Danny. Personally, I definitely would give it at least another year, even if you do decide to put it in a pot eventually. But that being said, I think it has a great balance with the slab. The mock up of the pot does not have that same great balance in my opinion.
