Paperbark - Melaleuca Quinquenervia

2-10-23: Just want to document this tree’s progression. I’ve had this for three years in this colander, sitting in a tray. It apparently mimics its native growth habitat (swamp) and the tree has become very vigorous as a result. You can see the roots coming out at the bottom. Styled a bit by wiring and now cut back. Will let it grow more this season and style. The primary emerging close to the soil is a sacrifice branch to further thicken the bottom and develop taper.

Another great Aussie species. M quinqinervia is really tough and resilient but the larger leaves make it less desirable than many other melaleucas. These do respond well to pruning and repotting but definitely look at other Australian species for great bonsai trees.
IMHO we have some of the best species in the world for response to pruning and response to root reduction.
