Hey everyone,
I’ve had this Premna almost a year now and it’s growing really well. It’s a fun tree to work with bc it grows really fast and back buds like crazy, so it provides a lot of options. But it has this huge second trunk or branch that I don’t care for. Its very straight and has inverse taper. The only solution I’m seeing is to remove the branch entirely (circled in red), but I want to get some feedback before I chop it off.
It will still have a fair amount of branches already going in different directions that I can work with coming off of the main trunk. I’d also like some feedback on the new leader I picked (top of Green line) it will either give the trunk ALOT of movement or be really ugly 😂 so let me know what you think, there are a couple branches at the apex that are closer to the original trunk line that would be less severe that I could go with.
There are 4-5 pictures from different angles
Peanut Butter for size reference.
Thanks!

That wild straight branch does need to be removed. However, my thoughts are to prune it off but I would leave a short stub, like at the thick red line shown here, that can be hollowed and carved out. If undesired in the future that stub can always be fully removed. I think the tree will be more interesting with it though. You could, after seeing the stub as the look grows on you, cut it back further like in the second attachment here. The tree is young yet and there are lots of changes that will happen as it grows. Experiment.

That’s an interesting thought, I hadn’t considered leaving a stub as a feature, aside from doing it to avoid die back. I haven’t done any carving yet. I think you’re right about leaving the stub I can picture it. I’ll give it a shot thanks! I’ll get to practice some hollowing/carving in future too 😎

For starters you can leave as much stub as you wish. It can always be cut back further…but cannot be extended once cut back. I tend to leave a longer stub and cut it back once I see the image I’m creating and find my visual comfort level.
