Received a reasonable offer for a Japanese beech I have been looking for some time.
While I like the form, size (~ 80 cm, 31 inches), and age that comes with it, I think this one suffered a bit from too many branches, swelling and inverse taper. As I am no expert for beeches (ie have no experience with them, so they might suffer from this more), I wonder what you would think? Reading through some posts, beeches need a long time to heal over (unlike maples).

Japanese beeches in particular often cost an arm and a leg even in poor or semi condition, so there is that.

Thank you!

I would be mostly concerned with the big swelling in the trunk at the first branches. The crown can be quite easily improved with some tension wires, and gentle pruning with backbudding over the next years.
I find that beech is not fast in closing wounds, but it is very willing to close them if given time.

Hi Jelle,

Thank you for your view, always appreciated from a person with such dedication and experience.

Exactly my thoughts about the swelling (pre reverse taper). It was not that obvious in leaf but now it is. Think very hard and long to tackle it.

keep in mind.. large scars, also healed over, remain large scars. But.. the species is rare in larger size

Indeed it is.
Reasonable sizes come with a hefty price tag as they are few in numbers. This is comparably value for money but I liked it more in leaf than bare.

Maybe will pass on this and save some more or look for Fagus sylvatica instead? Certainly need some proper time to think about ...

These are MUCH more available. But.. Also quite different. :)

Consider the option to e.g., contact bonsai dusseldorf with what you are looking for for their next visit to Japan. I think Bastian does take wishlists along. I KNOW BonsaiPlaza can look for specific trees. But.. First ask whatthey think is a reasonable price.

If I may ask.. what pricerange does this one fall?
