Some days I feel like chopping all of my trees to the size I eventually want them to be. Other days I want to go slow and let them grow.
If I have 20 seedlings to repot, I will do them all at the same time with the same soil. I can't seem to like to do experimenting with maybe only repot half in Spring and half in Summer and into different type of soils. Am curious if many of you feel the same.

I think of a hundred experiments and maybe execute just five of those.
It's pretty normal to me.
I'm similar. I'm a scientist and if I'm not mistaken I think you are too.

For me: Scientist brain tells me to just pick 1 experiment to do really thoroughly (well controlled, with 4+ subjects per group).
But bonsai brain gets easily distracted and usually doesn't follow the advice of scientist brain. :p

While I left all my designed experiment work behind me 32 years ago, that type of thinking still pops up in my head every now and then. When it does, I whack it like whacking a mole. With bonsai, I will go by feel.
I'm leaving the bonsai experiments to more dedicated people. I am just having fun.

I'm a scientist at work, I'm a science based hobbyist in my free time.
For instance, I like meddling with plant hormones, but I'm not going to do 500 dilutions to see which concentration is the optimal. I do one strong one, and one weak one. And then I forget about them and forget which one was which.

Hey, OCD is one reason I got into bonsai in the first place (and because I needed to teach myself about long term plans). Patience isn't exactly my forte, but I do like to tinker. I don't often have a bunch of one tree to experiment with, but I recently planted a few Vachellia seeds and have been experimenting and staggering my work (if it works on one I'll continue with others). Even giving some quite the Spartan treatment to see just how much of a beating they can take. I guess I'm using a scientific approach, but only to learn. Learning bonsai is a very hands-on thing for me. I can read the best advice here 100X, but will ultimately need to get my hands dirty and make mistakes in order to acquire the knowledge.

Is that a "Buttons and Bows" Camellia?

I think not as the name didn't ring the bell. I bought it from Nuccio. I have a couple white color flower ready to bloom as well

I'm pretty good at forgetting about things and just going with the routine, until one day I find myself chopping the crap out of some poor bush that never did anything wrong in it's life, and then I go back to the routine.

Once I spot something in a tree, I go nuts. Otherwise I'm fairly cool about it.

Whatever it is, it's lovely. My Buttons and Bows came from Nuccio's as well, great guys. Can't wait to get my azalea order for them ready. It just needs to warm up first.

Last few weeks I was thinking Spring is here... but last few days we having really got out of 40. After all we are just start of Feb.

I think it's rather foolish to experiment because with the right questions posted to the right people, the results to all the experiments can be found here.
