Nigel saunders bonsai zone [unpopular opinion]

This thread was quite entertaining. Thank you all for that.

I will go ahead and give my $0.02.
As a former fan of Nigels channel, I remember when he decided to monetize the channel and he had an internal struggle with that decision.
I don't make videos, but I imagine it can get very expensive very quickly.....and he held out for years. He seems like a stereotype of I super kind and friendly Canadian, lol, which is great.
He does have a few nice respectable trees, as Arnold showed.
I agree with whoever said something about "outgrowing his channel".....that's probably the most common thought out here about it.
I do remember being annoyed with the 3D printing videos and the other non bonsai related stuff....but I've kinda tuned him out over the last year or 2.

If he can make a living making YT videos with out getting canceled by the woketopian mob, then I say more power to him.....its a battlefield out there these days. I'm glad he makes money.

This is what im talking about. Why is everyone here so hoity and high and mighty. I cant have an opinion. I cant dislike this or that. Its the most peculiar thing ive ever experienced in my life.
You can have an opinion, as do we. That's the thing, we don't have to like yours and you don't have to like ours.
But it's kind of hypocritical to vent an opinion and then complain about the response from others.

I'm all for free speech, even hate speech, even lies. I also am all for free speech (not actions) in response. It either goes two ways, or not at all. No action, no reaction. If we accept one but not the other, we're forcing ideas into obscurity where they can grow to unhealthy heights.

Here in the colder parts of Europe we don't sugar coat and carry our opinion openly. We complain, we vent, we are grumpy, and we accept others to be the same too. Just because I don't agree with you, doesn't mean I can't like you. It doesn't mean I can never agree with you again.

Serious question from a noob to this forum.
Is there a thread for recommended YouTube Bonsai Channels?
My current favourites are.
1. Blue Sky Bonsai
2. Heron (Peter Chan)
3. Gro Bonsai
4. Eastern Leaf

The series that really put me off was when he made Martian soil and tried to grow “bonsai” in it. I think that once winter forces him to move his trees inside he has to come up with something else to do videos on. This year his rebuild of the porch killed a lot of his late summer plant work but it was somewhat interesting. I also am not all that enamored of his work on the neighborhood garden. But the stuff on the old truck is interesting until he overdoes that. And it is also interesting when he starts digging around in the back yard—he has an old Porche 211 stashed out there to be restored! I find it a bit funny that his neighbor put up a privacy fence that is between 8-10’ tall so they don’t have to look at the junk in the back yard.

Why is everyone acting like i cant hate what i hate?
I'm going to come to the rescue of @Bravura Bonsai here, because I recently had a similar experience.

I have only subscribed to one YouTube channel, and believe it or not, it was to a channel for someone in NY who did micro-electronic repairs. In other words, you take him your broken iPad that you dropped in the tub, and the guy would diagnose the problem and fix it. And we're not talking "swap out a few parts" - we're talking, micro-solder and remove bad components, and replace with new components - all for a fraction of the price that Apple would charge for a repair. The fun factor of his streams was that Apple doesn't like people repairing their products unless they are Apple employees. So there is a nice David versus Goliath thing going on... between a corporate giant and a guy who, in many cases, knows more about their hardware than company employees themselves. Good watching!

However... he became successful. Soon it wasn't about micro-electronics repair, and suddenly his videos became open mike night where he would be talking about his political views, or why big corporations suck, or why government over-reaches and fails. Now I may or many not agree with his views. But I was like "dude... this is not why I subscribed! I want to see some micro-electronics work... not hear your views about the man keeping you down!" Ultimately I unsubscribed.

I don't hate the guy. But I hate what he did.

One good analagy as I see it is that Karate Kid was also easy to watch and got people interested in bonsai. Great. But once you’re interested you don’t then go back to watch Mr Miyagi as reference material! If you do that you’re spreading disinformation to your peers/club etc.

This is the issue I have with old books and “beginner content in general”.

(that and the stuff clogs up my search results and “recomended vids”!!!!)

I did! Why does it look as if all of your trees are planted in shit garden soil?
You talk about how uninspiring Nigels videos are, but at least he understands the basics of soil needed to grow bonsai.
Unlike your sticks in dirt!!
And your attempt at maple seedlings are done with the proper media! Yeah, right!!
My soil is garden clay and my pots are recycled materials or empty soda plastic bottles. Trying to make bonsai accessible for everyone

Yes very much so. Google bonsai and his channel is one of the first things you see. I expect more from YouTube's poster boy for bonsai
Like YouTube has some say in the quality of Bonsai videos that people create.....
To quote President House Plant, "C'mon Man!"

I was talking to my kids the other day about how hate is no stronger a WORD than love.

Hate hate hate..... powerless.

It's the emotion behind it that matters, I don't think this emotion our new Friend is feeling is that "hateful", as much as he just used a word to describe what he was feeling.

My daughter says "I hate you" all the time, but cries with sincerety if she ever actually hurts someone. I'd be a fool to think she is actually hateful.

I regularly "hate this shit", question it, and realize the media is making me question it, wasting my time.

👇Just watch the first one knowing these veterans we, "thank for their service", with all emptiness, are watching too.

I believe @Bravura Bonsai came to a realization that changed his life so greatly, he made a first post that it's really hard to back peddle on, but he didn't mean it, as proven by the continued righteous conversation.

A lotta, who I call (insert you preffered politically correct or private incorrect insult here), ACTUALLY hate this dude.

They are cowards because they are not here backing up the hate.
Or smart enough to know they don't share the same hate.

Y'all still have respect for those people that actually hate Nigel.

Just Saying.

Don't let them confuse you!

You're acting like more hate beats hate.

Thank you for pointing out that they are doing the exact thing they are judging me for. Some of them are even judging my youtube channel and i guarantee you they have no channel of their own.

Dud
Guilty. Finished my last degree 16 years ago. And when I WAS taking classes in uni, I hated long-winded people too. I really have a hard time spending an hour or more watching someone standing in front of a whiteboard. 9 out of 10 times, the best route is to not lecture at all but only have interactive discussion, Q/A sessions, imo. But that is why I prefer face-to-face over online :)
I didnt attent college i didnt even finish high school. No jokes. I know i am below average intelligence thats why im here

I could dump some trash in your yard if you need pots.
No jokes but i do that. I go on walks and hikes. Sometimes i see containers that are clean or the right size i pick them up. Coincidentally whenever i find a container i find a sapling or 2 to go with it. Kind of a win win. The lemon trees growing on my channel were all from a fish and chips takeout i ordered. There was a lemon wedge and they had cut it so as to miss damaging all the seeds. I sowed them immediately. I just use whatever is around me i havent spent a single cent on any of my trees and i have over 200 seedlings and cuttings growing. Its really exciting.

It's not all cumbaya around here...but it would pay to burn one and pass it.
