Hello all,

Hope you are having a nice day.
This past weekend I acquired a new Bald Cypress. To not bog down with unnecessary details I will list out the important ones

Problem: Outer foliage is showing a slight discoloration especially in contrast to the inner and the new foliage. Pics attached.
I was thinking it may need shade first to acclimate from the change(?) but i acquired the tree from a bonsai nursery about an hour away and the owner had it in similar environment.

History: I was told the tree was potted and owned by Randy Bennett a popular BC enthusiast/grower last winter.
Age: 10-15 years or so, 3”-4” dia trunk about 2.5 to 3 ft tall with a trunk “chop” at the top capped with clay.
Health: seems to be very healthy with roots growing outside the bottom of the “pot” (some kind of shallow but large oil catch pan)
Substrate: From what I was told it is a field grown tree that was potted last winter (either at the start or near the beginning of spring) in its native soil which is a seemingly compact loamy swamp mud is the best I can describe it.
Environment: Full sun, water everday until soil is saturated although I did obtain the tree this past weekend.
Misc: I noticed the substrate dried quickly at the surface so I sparsely covered the top with high quality sphagnum moss to retain some moisture.

Im thinking I should shade it a bit but they grow like crazy here where I am in full sun but I know its not the same.

What should I do to get ahead of this potential problem?

Thank you very much

I thought that may have been the case. Would it need to be shaded like that indefinitely or just for now?
I’d give it afternoon shade from now until fall. Bc aren’t necessarily full sun all the time trees. They can and do get sunburned and even crispy in the summer. You might be able to submerge the pot and keep it in full sun. Personally I’d go with the partial shade though

After moving it to the afternoon shade this week all the discoloration went away in a matter of days.
You were %100000 correct.

As saplings BC grow in shade under larger trees. New growth on some can be sensitive to too much sun.

Now its showing this discoloration
I did do a foliar spray with diluted miracl gro.

I think that was/is the culprit but what do you think?

That does look like fertilizer burn. How long ago did you apply it? Are you certain of the dilution you used? I usually "eyeball it" to a faint blue color.

Don't do foliar spray with actual fertilizer. Also, BC's don't really need it. I have al mine in full sun and they thrive. But, I have my BCs in water, yours probably got slightly dehydrated which is why moving it into shade helped.

I see okay sounds good I will stop the practice.

I definitely eye balled it lol but it was diluted a good amount. I usually spray my junipers every two or so weeks and they seem to do really well. I will stop spraying my BC's then.
