Needs advice on this fir throw away Christmas tree found on street

Found this balsam fir outside with a bucket base - likely a Christmas tree throw away
the tree is alive
thick trunk

but don’t see any roots , the trunk is nailed into base with a nail

see attached pics

not sure how it survived

any idea what I should do.?
put soil in this red base bucket and let plant sit there
take tree out = pull the nail out from under and plant in another pot ?

any suggestions folks ?

that is a cut christmas tree. likely cut in october. It is dead. It may not know it yet, due to the cold, but it is dead and has about 0% chance of ever living again. Sad but that is what cut christmas trees do. they die

The tree is dead and/or is doomed. It can't regrow roots fast enough at this point to keep the foliage above alive. FWIW dead conifers can remain green for months after they're dead...

The last time I had a tree like this I put it outside on a dry day. I then touched it with a lit match. I wanted to see how fast a tree could start a fire. Answer: Really fast. It can sort of explode into flames in seconds. But it was a lot of fun. Artificial trees are way better.

I have branches I’ve cut from live trees. The branches are dead. But they look alive as the needles feed off the existing sap for weeks and weeks from winter through early summer. The cold keeps the branches looking good. But in the end the branches are dead. They do explode well with fire though in the summer when I stack them to burn.

Take it back to where you found it. Get yourself a tree with some roots.
