Need timing help for chopping.

good thread

With some good and interesting info. If anyone did hear any more of the Peter Warren lecture, I'd be very interested to know what else was said.

I collected lots of trees and almost all the ones collected/chopped prior and at bud swelling survived.

In contrast, almost all that was collected/chopped after bud break died. I believe it is the worst time to chop just because all the stored energy was just spent and the new leaves haven't returned any of that "investment" back yet. Once the leaves broke...I will wait for it to at least harden, let it recover, before a chop IF I cannot wait until next spring.

JMHO.

actually the best time for me to chop maples is neither early spring or late fall, it's summer!
let your tree grow freely until june (untill the new shoots start to become woody because it depend on climate/localization of course), then cut. The tree is in full strenght, wil react immediately, will start healing immediately too, and there are much less risks of die back than when the tree is not active
