I'm going to mess with making some bonsai pot, medium to large ones, with cement. Anybody know the best cement mix to do that with?
Help always appreciated.

I’m interested in trying my hand at making a slab for myself this year and I found this blog entry that seemed to offer some good ideas. It suggests using non-shrinking cement.

It depends which of the two routes you plan to go.

Are you planning on free form sort of sculpting a pot?

Or are you looking to make a mold and pouring it in?

I have experience with the former, using chicken wire, mesh, cement dye, and fast setting cement. So I can definitely help you there. Here is the thread on one of them

This cement pot was created with chicken wire in general shape, (sorry I don't have photos it was 30yrs ago) and then very light layers of cement with colorant added. (don't forget drain holes!!) It's about 48" OAL.

I use Quikcrete quick setting cement for cement slabs and pots. Have experimented with pumice instead of sand to reduce weight with good results, It is important to dye the pumice prior to using for a more natural look. Cement dye is readily available. Home Depot stocks. Here are some photos of a slab under construction for ideas. This one is a bit more complicated with slope/ base support and drainage holes.

Here's a thread I put my results into.

I use portland cement with play sand at various ratios. 1:3 is as close to a standard as I've gotten, personally.

I've tried siftted perlite fines as aggregate with weight reduction in mind. It was much more brittle and less plastic to work with. Not worth it for my process without further adjustments. They were on average ~20-30% lighter than mixes with play sand, though. I sure liked that part.

I have not seen this mentioned yet, one last thing-

Make sure the inside of the pot is sealed. If there is too much texture or too many air pockets, the roots will grow inside the cement and you will have a terrible time trying to repot after a years growth. You should smooth the interior as much as possible, and consider Epoxy or similar coating inside.
