I was on my way to see a client and I was fairly early so I stopped into a orchid / bonsai nursery. The nursery is known to have mass produced trees (almost all in the same style from China) but I thought lets have a look and see if there is anything that might catch my eye.

They were selling Serissa Japonica for around $30 each (490 Rand here in South Africa) and with the exposed roots, it tweaked my interest. After searching through about 100 trees, I had narrowed it down to 5 and I took the one that I liked the best.

It is my first Neagari style tree and although the canopy is not developed yet, I saw loads of potential to be able to work with it and get a great future bonsai.

Let me have know your thoughts.

Dorian,

that is Serissa s - Chinese type.
A tall shrub to around 8 feet or 244 cm

In China grown as a hedge and in the ground handles zone 7

Highly adapted to growing in the tropics.

Have seen trunks at around 13 cm.

Must have freely draining soil, full sun and likes Bonsai pots that
are porous or glazed on the sides but porous bottoms.

Once healthy will drive you nuts with pruning and sometimes
over flowering.
Good Growing

*Learning curve --------- take cuttings, practice on them.
