Finally got out of the house during this quarantine madness with the wife, baby and dog yesterday. Went for a 2 mile hike on one of our favorite trails nearby in Ansted WV. Hawks nest rail trail. This trail was a railway in the early 1920s and a mining hotspot. I’ve always enjoyed nature and going on hikes and living in WV there’s a lot to explore. Since reading into bonsai a lot over the past month and learning more about plants and trees my respect for nature has skyrocketed even more.
Anyways here’s some photos from the hike.

Fantastic shots of some great natural beauty. 👍 The second image of the fall/tumble(lol) quite succeeds at enticing the viewer’s curiosity. I also particularly enjoy the bridged trail perspective shot...very comforting.

Thanks. It’s a really fun trail and the fall is of a decent size at least 20ft. As we were on our way back there were some kayakers going down it. Daredevils I must say.

Wow! THAT would be intense!

I’m envious of the ability to explore this trail. ;)

Any potential-for-collection trees catch your eye?
Didn’t go off the trail really and being a state park and a beautiful trail I wouldn’t want to take anything right from the trail that’s part of the beauty of the walk. Although there were a ton of small 2-3ft eastern hemlocks that looked interesting

Here’s one of the mine tunnels
If the perfect piece of material was 100 yards deep would you go in for it?

Holey Moley! That SOUNDS quite exciting.. potential for adventure galore. My testosterone says “Heck yeah! Let’s do it!” ..... but in reality, even the PICTURES (and thought) mildly agitate the ol’ claustrophobia.🤣

Wild and wonderful!

My Dad is from a little town named Union in WV. Definitely find a spot where you can legally collect some Hemlock. And check out the native red spruce on the scenic highway in Pocahontas County when you get a chance.
