National museum re-open

After almost a month and a half of closure, the National Bonsai and Penjing Museum is open again. Some pics from this past weekend. Most of the fall color on the trees happened in October when no one could see it. Some color left though.

I’ve always loved that windswept elm. Never been in person, just seen it in photos. It’s just got that “it” factor for me 😊
That tree was donated by DC area resident and long time bonsai artist Stanley Chinn about 20 years ago I think. It’s a pretty large bonsai about three feet tall. He donated many distinctive trees including that Chinese elm forest in the pic above which is becoming one of my favorites. It has a kind of “Winnie the Pooh 100 acre wood” kind of vibe
 
It takes a lot of effort to keep it looking in that shape. Lots of wiring and selective pruning
