The National Arboretum is looking for an apprentice to do advanced work on the National Bonsai and Penjing collection. The position is funded through the National Bonsai Foundation. If I were 30 years younger, I'd apply.

Would be a dream job if I lived closer and had the experience.

if this is Apprentice, who the master will be?
This is the U.S. not a Japanese nursery. There is no "master." There are museum and arb staff and management. There are also professional horticulturalists, as well and long-time docents and volunteers.

I'll apply after I retire in 10 years,if they still have this program and don't do age discrimination😉
I get it, but it you're over 45, it's probably not going to happen. Arb can, however, use volunteer work. I've known several people who have volunteered for bonsai work there through their local bonsai clubs in the area. THey're Basically doing a lot of the hands-on work, pruning, pinching, even assisting larger redesign work on some of the trees. Some volunteers have been up there for decades.

yup,I actually thought about it before. Honestly some (many actually)of the pieces there look like do need some more care there

Sounds like a great opportunity to do bonsai everyday and be around other fellow tree lovers as well as gain tons of knowledge! I’d be volunteering there at least if I was within a good driving range.

I'm a volunteer at the National Arboretum. It's a great place. Last I checked the National Bonsai Museum has been pretty full up on volunteers (I've wanted to join them) a lot of people were very eager to get back to it after the Covid restrictions lifted and they were allowed back in. They do rely heavily on their volunteers who do a lot of work and it's an amazing opportunity.

I volunteer at a local private arboretum. It’s called cox arboretum. Very inspirational place. Haven’t in a while but I think it’s the next best thing if there aren’t any bonsai gardens or museums to do it at local.
