I bought a large Arakawa JM a couple. I've been looking for one for a long time, so even if this just becomes a landscape tree that I air layer off of, I'll be very happy. It's roughly 9' tall.

I dug into the soil near the base, and I can't find a graft. A couple inches of trunk were buried, and it starts to flare out where I dug down to. I didn't want to do much more digging since I was disturbing a bit of surface roots.

As of right now, I'm leaning toward making this a landscape tree. Although it's potentially on its own roots, there's little to no taper in the trunk and there's no low branching. If I make this a bonsai, I'd be left with few options outside of a low trunk chop.

I think that that's a good call. You'd be able to get plenty of layers out of it as a landscape tree.

Appreciate the feedback, Wires! I'm looking to add a number of JM in the landscape anyway, so that wouldn't really be a loss.
