Believe it or not, this is a 3-4 year old yew. It's been slow going but the little thing has made a lot of progress.

I have a better soil mix for it in the mail as we speak, so..

LOL.. sorry about picture size.. wow

Anyway, this will serve as the first progress report. mame yew.JPGmame yew 2.JPGmame yew 3.JPGmame yew 5.JPG

I haven't done much fertilizer, pretty sure I need to feed it for it to start thickening. I'll put it in akadama/lava/pumice next spring to develop root structure.

Any thoughts on speeding up development, or in general?

First up, has that cup got drainage holes?
Where is it kept? (Outside/inside? Full sun?)
That pot (assuming it has drainage holes) will be fine for now but to get any real thickening you’ll need to stick it in a bigger pot (or better, the ground) and let grow freely for a few years - bonsai are almost always grown bigger to then reduce down in size

lol... Yeah... I was having a little fun. It's now in akadama, lava, pumice. 👍

It was in some really poorly draining soil for a long time, and I just watered it. I think it's headed in the right direction now , at least.
Hopefully it'll respond well and put on some girth.

The cup does have drainage, though, lol, and a screen. But really I was just kinda bored, and...

you sure that's a yew? looks like eastern red cedar or the like? I could be completely wrong though

Actually, I've never seen the mother plant produce the yew berries so..... no, not exactly. I made an assumption based on shrubbery I've had in the past but tree identification is new to me. Eastern Red Cedar...? I'll read up, thanks.

No, it's not an Eastern Red Cedar. The needles on the mother are pinnately compound. They do look just like yew.

This one is underdeveloped. It sat for years trying to grow underneath it's mother... who sits in eternal shade..... before I put it into a pot. I think those needles are like "seed leaves"... but I could be completely wrong. I just started it on fertilizer.

Maybe it is one.... no idea where it came from.... but ERC seedlings do look like this guy.
