I was going to wait till September to pot this air layer, but I’m thinking I need to go ahead and do it now. The roots are coming out the sides, bottom and top. I’m thinking they will start drying out doing that. Thoughts?
Those poking roots drying out should not be a problem, it makes them branch off more inside the ball.
Which is a good thing if you want that, otherwise, yes, it's potting time.
I went ahead and pulled the trigger on the top air layer. It’s doing fine on its own now. Figured I could get one more air layer on it before it goes dormant in December. I wanted to make these three trees about 12-14” tall. It was just a long stick tree when I got it. Was suppose to be a Silver Maple but definitely looking like a Red Maple. Just about all the leaves look like red maple. Second air layer is in progress. First one only took a month.
