I repotted this Murraya Paniculata in June, assuming that being a tropical, it is OK to do so. It was doing fine in the first weeks but got worse afterwards, so I moved it to shade, watering frequently but carefully. There was a heatwave here in last two days, temperatures rising to 100 F (38 C) with a dry wind and today, I found that most of the foliage is crisp dry. Only a small part of the tree has live foliage.

What can I do to save the tree? Is it OK that I defoliate dead leaves completely, get it indoors a few weeks (Murraya's can be grown indoors as far as I know) and wait until the tree starts pushing foliage again?

I would not bring it in, you will miss out on the humidity then it will dry faster. Looks like upcoming weather is perfect for its recovery.

Thanks for the reply. I defoliated the dead leaves, 80 % of the foliage is gone and the remainder is mostly not healthy. Humidity is high again outside now, so I'll put it in the most sheltered spot from the wind and the sun. I will be home next week and be able to check it frequently and mist it during the day.
