Please help me is the trunk splitting into two a fault.

I would not keep both those trunks. At the very least it will thicken more at that point to create reverse taper.
Removing one will give much better taper in the trunk.

Agreed. I would take off the one on the left of the picture. This will pay off with trunk taper and movement.

Some folks would be blind to up there because the future tree will be much lower, like the first branch being the next segment in the future, at which point, up there is just sacrifice.
