Hi friends ,

Am from cold Minnesota but will be moving to Atlanta Georgia which is definitely gonna be a learning curve for me due to the huge zone difference .

I have been trying and has been a little successful in keeping mountain hemlock (Tsuga mertensiana) alive outside of pacific north west for around 1.5-2 years .

However , Atlanta is a different ball game with much less cold weather and long hot humid summers . Want to know from all bonsai hobbyists from Atlanta - has anyone ever attempted keeping mountain hemlocks alive there ? Again not Eastern hemlocks but mountain hemlocks .

Regards,
Abhishek

I’m a Canadian eastern Ontario . Manly interested in eastern hemlock . I do not have any Mountain. But in a Miria vid . Ryan claimed they were far more heat tolerant in the summer than people think . And that some are in collections in the south east . And stated the lack of winter dormancy cold is a concern . Out of the sun anything over 90 d f . Not sure the size of your tree . But there are people that use refrigeration . For winter storage of cold hardy trees . One thing is it’s controllable and consistent , Hats off to you for success in Wisconsin . David Easterbrook . From Montreal . Stated directly to Ryan in a vid that both western hemlocks struggle in the east . David is in case you don’t now . Highly respected bonsai practitioner . ( including by Ryan) retired curator and main creator of the bonsai exhibit at the Montreal botanical garden .

You should be ok from Atlanta northward. Especially the northern suburbs and northward. Officially they are good to zone 8. Atlanta northward is 8a and southward is 8b. As you go south from Atlanta, things warmup quite a bit considering the distance.
