Hey all,

I don't regularly post but I had some time and wanted to get some thoughts on this steal of a deal I just acquired.

Basically, a new friend of mine owns this nursery and was clearing out a large amount of stock for spring and let me take 3 old amurs for 12 bucks a peice (only one is pictured, due to lack of space in my small car.. Couldn't bring them all home).

I've heard that completely bare-rooting an amur this old can be a recipe for disaster? It will obviously get chopped this spring, but I was wondering if taking air layers and chopping in the same season could be detrimental to the tree?

Anyway, your thoughts?

I love Amur.

That base is gonna be something!

In my world, an a/l is a slow chop with benefits.

I would remove all those suckers years before chopping the top though, in worry it may quit the fattys growth and favor the suckers.

I think working with all the trunks would be interesting, depending on the other materials looks!

Can't wait to see the others!

I'd cut off the suckers and chop it back to one of the vertical branches as a new apex lead. Then I'd bare root it to see what i have to work with. I'd saw off as much down growing rootage as possible, so I can start growing a root system suitable in size for a bonsai pot. Do it all at once.

I agree with don then put it in a cement mixing tub for the next3-5 years and watch it jump and heal all wounds do nothing to the tree if the 1st year then start working on branch placement in year 2 .The first year is getting the tree established and it will grow like a weed in year 2.

Thanks For the feedback guys. This bear is set for surgery come spring time.

Also Don,

Are you planning in auctioning off any more tridents soon?

i have done the same thing with a trident as you have done here. Cant wait for it to start back budding.
