Hi all. I bought this Japanese Maple two years ago from a nursery (already in bonsai form). Shortly after buying it, the temperature jumped to 115° and the leaves suffered some heavy sun scorch. It has since recovered and I repotted it in an inert mix of lava rock/akadama/pine bark in April this year. It appeared to be fairly root bound, so I did some heavy pruning of the roots as well.

This year’s growth has been a bit strange. This tree pushed initial growth fairly well, then it seemed like the buds got burnt at the ends. We have had an extremely mild spring/summer by Oklahoma standards, so I am a bit perplexed what might cause these symptoms. I have attached some photos for reference.

This tree is growing beneath 40% shade cloth during peak sun and gets unfiltered morning and evening light. The new leaves just emerged, but some look disfigured. If any of you have suggestions for improving my horticultural knowledge, I’d love any and all pointers. I bought a Shishigashira JM this year and would love to add a few more variants to the collections, but I also want to ensure I’m adequately protecting these trees from Oklahoma’s wind and sun to the best of my ability while improving my horticultural knowledge.
