Picked up this super tiny Dwarf Mugo pine. I went ahead and chose the front/ cut the middle branch to give some movement.

Not entirely sure to do with the two back branches. I’m assuming I want to keep one for depth, but maybe not? And if so which one is better for depth?

Same, I was suppose to be Christmas shopping. Going back this week to but more, now I just to learn all I can about pines.

Do these dwarf varieties backbud on old wood? My understanding is the pure mugo is somewhat recalcitrant

Cool little tree, too bad all the branches are are at a whorl. That point will just continue to swell over time. Reverse taper is inevitable.

BTW.....I know someone who makes some nice mame pots if you're looking! 😉

Haha, I know it already has a little inverse taper, but it's not too bad. If I craft this into something amazing I will surely need to hit you up for a nice pot :D.

Would look to point out that I am wrong: mugo is more than cooperative in backbudding when healthy

I agree with @Pitoon
The fact that all branches are coming out at the same spot is a problem.

Wiring up #1 might lead to a 'Y' look from the front?.

#2 looks like it's a little lower off the trunk than #1. My inclination would be to keep # 2 for now, cut #1. I probably would cut 2 eventually but I'd wait now and see. Use the largest one going to the right as the main trunk and the first one on the left as the first branch.

after getting rid of #1, wouldn't thinning #2 to get as much light to the wood closest to the trunk get a few back buds to pop? looks like some little bumps there. eventually you could build a branch from a back bud, while keeping the growth in check/weaker compared to the other sections in the tree, so reverse taper won't be bad.

Is possible yes and would help with taper on that branch for sure. I'd feed it well for one season before trying to encourage buds. The extra nutrients/energy would help encourage buds.
