I picked this tree up today at Lowe's for a whopping $9! They had their Japanese Maples marked down by 75%. In my opinion it was the only one with potential. I'll work the roots next Spring, do a little chopping, and see what I have to work with. I'm thinking I can get at least a nice twin trunk out of it.

Great looking start you have there. Looks like a fun project.

Jarrod, check the leaves on the main trunk and compare with those bottom shoots. It's possible that it's a graft and suckering beneath the graft.

Bloodgood?

That is one heck of a deal regardless of the variety... Remove all but one of the suckers at the base and stick it in the ground for a couple years IMO... That would give you something to work with one day. Unless you plan on a clump style, it will have to be whacked back real hard, leaving some nasty scars and if you don't let it really grow out you will have them for years on end!

The tag just says Red Maple so it's not very specific. When I first looked at it a clump seemed like the only feasible thing I could envision for this tree. Like you mentioned, I would be dealing with some nasty scars otherwise. I will work it a little next Spring and see if I can get some low buds and go from there.

When I was shopping I was attracted to one from a distance that looked to have nice taper. When I got closer I noticed that the perception of taper was created by the graft union. I picked this one because it did not appear to be grafted to me. It is a possibility as I didnt dig down all the way yet but the leaves do match so that's a good sign. Thanks for the heads up though! I'll investigate a bit further.

If it costs a lesser amount than you would be upset if you lost, its definitely worth buying!

Single digit price is in that category!

Nice score!

Fall pricing

Love the deals we get at this time of year.

One of the Lowe's near me was "clearancing" Liriope. Regularly $5.98 sale price $1. I bought 24 of them, left a lot for someone else.

Also Home depot had Mondo grass for $1.25, if I remember.
