Hi guys. As a beginning bonsai enthusiast, i have created this multitrunk japanese maple tree. However, spring growth is in full throttle and Im scratching my head about how to get the tree to direct more energy to lower parts of its trunk(s). There are some branches, but they are really thin and obviously not so vigorous as the top of the tree. I have read lots of conflicting approaches as defoliation, partial defoliation, completely cutting new growth at top of the tree and honestly dont know, which of them could be the best. As for partial defoliation at the top, i think thats not what im looking for since that will stimulate new buds there and wouldnt solve my problem.

I see this as an issue of apical dominance which is common thing with maples. But what is the best technique to direct tree energy to lower parts, yet keeping the top healthy and growing/maturing at decent pace? My concern is that if i completeely cut off all the new shoots at the top (so the tree will have to use lower branches to grow foliage), that whole upper part of the tree will suffer in terms of development and maturation. Will be glad for any suggestions of you experienced ones. Martin

Just because you don’t want to do something is not a good reason not to do what needs to be do to accomplish the task. Developing a maple tree is all about making trade offs at the right time and directing growth where you want it.

Encourage you to leave all options open and study more about maples. Best resource is Bonsai Maples by Andrea Meriggioli

A few examples of bonsai trade offs…

Stall strong apical growth to get stronger basal growth, That doesn’t mean to cut off all the apical growth, just to stall it to shift the energy balance and invigorate the areas of weaker growth. etc

Stall all growth to get more ramification throughout.

Partial defoliation of strong growth to redirect energy to weaker areas

Fully defoliate a robust healthy tree (not every year btw) to stall growth and develop smaller leaves etc etc etc

cheers
