Hello, I was hoping someone can direct me to a good vendor that may have Satuski Azalea. I really dont want a stick in a pot..something more established but surely not a specimen $$$. Its a birthday gift .I have looked online a bit but keep seeing the same stock picture everywhere. There are a few on ebay but not sure about the look with the price. Im not familiar with azaleas..I have several other trees but no Azalea..Thank you

Elena

Are you looking for a BONSAI, or ore bonsai stock? Lowes has a surprising selection of Azaleas at some locations! I have purchased Chinzan, Gumpo and a couple other varieties of satsuki there in the past, and found two different types of Kurume in The past year alone! If it is just a starter tree you are looking for, might not be a bad place to look. If you want a BONSAI, the places listed have some great stock- all cost a but- and you can get some good looking ones from bonsai smith or whatever his name is on Ebay as well... He has some nice import Sataukis for around the $150 range last time I checked.

I don't grow azaleas (yet), but was shocked by what my local Lowes had yesterday that, with a little work and a pot, would have gone a long way for little $.

Exactly! I got
Two large ones (3 gallons) for under $30!!! Both with good potential... You have to DIG to find the good ones as most are bushes with a hundred trunks coming out of the soil... But you can find big trunked singles sometimes... And for $13 I think it what I paid??? Hell yeah that is a lot for a little... Plus Azaleas root from cutting so easily, I can buy one of the bushes and grow a bunch of cuttings to make bonsai from.

There's an azalea nursery on Hacks Cross Rd., just north of State Line Road. I stopped there once, but it's been years. Lots of variety, but I don't recall digging too deep for satsukis. Of course from there, you're only 5 minutes to Brussels...

Almost none of them will be Satsuki, however. Occasionally Lowes or HD have the "Gumpo" cultivar, but I've never seen anything else Satsuki-wise at either.

Thanks, good to know! Drove by there the other day and almost stopped, they were doing a lot of business and the place looks like it has potential from the road. (The Hacks Cross Nursery that is, I wander around Brussel's on a regular basis.)

Nuccio's Nursery near Pasadena California has a lot of satsuki azaleas for prebonsai work. Probably the most selection in this country. They have a good catalog for mail order too.
Check out www.NucciosNurseries.com .
Good luck.

Really? Have you been looking? I have found 4-5 different varieties of Satsuki Azaleas at HD and Lowes in the past and two different types of Kurume... Three in the past 2 weeks or so alone!

I'm no longer adding trees -- getting rid of them, in fact -- but I always look and there aren't any in the HD nearest me (Spartenburg). What varieties have you seen?

Maybe I need to stop by Lowe's on my way home tonight.....

Ive never seen Satsukes at HD or Lowes here ether, they always are all gumpo and karume; same with most landscape nurseries.

The only place I have found satsuke and chinzan around here is a landscape nursery that specialized in some not so common varieties.

Momo No Haru is the most recent Satsuki I found there- that and Kurume were what I bought my last trip. In the past I have seen two different types of Gumpo, Chinzan... A couple others. Previously- I don't recall the names though. I know they order different things for different stores obviously...
