I feel fortunate to live minutes from Longwood Gardens. It is a huge expanse of land with a top notch conservatory owned by the DuPont family.I visit it quite often.I took some shots of some of my favorite bonsai they have on display. Some of these trees ,I have been observing quite regularly for the past twelve years.it was cloudy today and lighting was somewhat poor. For size, the planks are all 6-8 inches. These are rather large at 2-4 feet bonsai.A couple are less than 2 '.These are all grown indoors with auto ventilation when needed to go dormant properly.

The meadow.

These are the best shots I currently have of the meadow.I love to walk in the meadow during the winter and enjoy the sun while counting the days till' spring. You can see it behind the maple tree too.The trees are beautiful on the grounds because they have been pruned by arborists for years.

That Black Pine in your second series of pics (4th in line) has been there for years and is one of my absolute favorites.

Longwood is where I was first exposed to bonsai when I was kid, but unfortunately I haven't been there is a few years.

Thanks so much for posting the pics.

Thank you for posting those :D I live pretty close to there as well and that particular "Garden" never fails to make for a nice local outing. Seems we enjoy it more each time. Curious if either of you are involved in a local club or are perhaps interested in starting one this Spring...

The only bonsai group that I know of in the area is the Brandywine Bonsai Club (or Society). I don't know any of those members at all; that's the closest. I went to one demo. about 10-12 years ago and thought about joining, but never followed through.

There's a gentleman in the Kennett Square area by the name of Doug Paul who has, from what I've heard, one of the nicest collections in the country. If I'm not mistaken, he's the only American to have entered a tree in the Kokufu Ten exhibit in Japan, so that's an incredible feat in an of itself. From what I understand, he's a very private man and I'm not sure if he's involved in anything locally, or to what degree he allows visitors, etc. I heard that he has some of the top bonsai artists work on his trees.

If you guys ever wanted to get together and compare notes and work on a few trees, we could figure something out.

I wonder if that would be the Kennett Collection? I went to the website and was surprised about how secretive it was.Perhaps I will check it again and see how or if you can visit the collection.

Years ago I wanted to join the Brandywine Bonsai Society, but I was not sure if they met on any other days than the weekend,as I have always worked weekends. As far as starting a club,Right now I don't know if I have energy to do so.You may have sparked my interest into possibly trying to join a club.Since I do not practice classical guitar anymore,as I have been enveloped in that guitar for six years.I know there is some great artists involved with Brandywine Bonsai. The only one I can think of is Howard McNeal of Old Mill Bonsai.I helped his son Carry Howard's trees out of protection. His Japanese maples were quite outstanding.Huge buttressed trunk, broom type maples about two feet high.He gave me a red maple in a three gallon pot(that I could not keep alive).I have off on Wednesdays and Thursdays.Kind of different than the mainstream.I still may look into Brandywine Bonsai.Or join.

Well I just visited Douglas Paul's website.I must admit that me,living five minutes from kennet square,I can't believe I have no idea where this collection is located. It has been dubbed maybe the finest collection in the United States......man I really need to check into the local bonsai seen.It is flourishing in my locality.

I just looked into Brandywine Bonsai.they meet on Saturday mornings.Guess I will just stick with my Bonsai Focus magazine and Bnut and the web for my knowledge.Really though,a good bonsai magazine is worth it's weight in gold for people like me.I work Saturdays,
