The last day or two I have had to log on every time I visit bonsainut in spite of having the stay logged in box checked. Has something changed here?

Naturally now that I finally asked about this it is now working again after 2 day, go figure—but tomorrow is another day!

Probably related to your browser not storing site data or cookies (not sure what mechanism the site uses - if I was near my PC I'd check, but I'm too lazy right now).

Your tip ws close. I installed ipados 17 yesterday and the new version of the Safari browser has something called Private Mode that was on by default. Once I figured out how to turn that off the login function worked again.
