This is my live oak I put in the ground in the Fall. It was about 7’ tall. I cut it down to this height (20-22”) because of the lowest branch on it. I’m not familiar with oaks. I would love to cut it down to 6-8”, but no buds or anything on that slick trunk. Can I cut it and hope for buds to pop? In NE Tx. Temps warming. Crepe Myrtle’s and maples starting to leaf out. Enlighten me please.

My apologies. That budding branch coming up the right side is my elm behind it. So not to confuse.

Live oak will backbud profusely from hard pruning. If you’re in NE Texas this is likely a hardier relative of the southern live oak. Quercus fusiformis or escarpment live oak is favored in drier colder interior away from the coast.

It is a great bonsai subject. I’ve had a large collected one for over 25 years. It responds well to bonsai cultivation once it is adapted to a pot. It grows well in regular bonsai soil with about a 20 percent organic content

Hard pruning into old wood is my preferred method of developing it. Wiring them can snap older beaches easily. I only use wire on year old growth that is flexible.

I feel your chop is way too high. I would chop it much lower. They will back bud profusely as RockM stated.
