Congratulations. I also have 3 seedling volunteers from among my trees just potted up this spring and doing great. Would suggest to grow bigger tree as leaves will only reduce part way. Plans for mine are 2 cascades and a very informal or slanting upright at least 18-24". What is your location please

How are you dealing with the big compound leaves.

Prune, prune, prune. Here's a birds eye view of mine. Notice any compound leaves? It just stopped making them after the 2nd or 3rd pruning.

I haven't even tried yet, I just prune, then when I see new growth from the leaf base I cut off the old leaf. May try defoliation soon, it's one crazy fast grower.

Well just for the sake of knowing, I went ahead and did about an 85% defoliation. I'll let you know how it went in a couple weeks.

Only 13 days and my ash is in full leaf again. The first few sets of leaves definitely seem to be smaller then before.

Maybe Aaron's is Arizona ash (Fraxinus velutina) and yours, BonsaiButler, Oregon ash (Fraxinus latifolia)...
