I'm starting a new thread on this tree because In my first post I thought it was a kiyohime but now I know its a Kotohime lol. The first picture is when I purchased it in 2015.
kiyohome purchased from Marc Torppa 2015 (2).jpg

In 2016 I repotted the tree in new soil and did nothing to it but let it grow.

I got this one from Growing Grounds . I got a few trees from him but this one had a pretty good root spread on it.

I didn't know he grew this cultivar, interesting! I think you've done great with it, did you make cuttings out of what you cut off?

Ok, This maple grew really well for me this year. It grew quite a few new branches all over and the root graft seem to be doing well. In the spring I plan on doing a repot and checking on the graft but for now I think its time to start thinking about the future design of the tree. I was thinking about a broom style but what do you guys think? :)

when you chopped the large branches, did you cut back to a bud or do blind chops?

If there is one species of maple to cut blindly, Koto Hime is it. They send out buds everywhere.

I don't really see the plan with this. The original picture looks like it just needed some reduction and ramification and it would have been a bonsai, of course with some root grafts and possible branch grafts. How big was the trunk when you acquired?

At this point I’m leaning Towards a broom style design unless someone comes up with a better design. The trunk is a little over 2 inches wide.

inches wide.

Thanks for the thread. I just picked up one of these and I'm already in love. I didn't get much info from the person I bought it from. Can these tolerate full sun or are they more part sun?

I'm still cleaning it up. I'll make branch choices next year and look to airlayer the ones I decide to remove.

MrMaple has from time to time. I've seen both grafted and own roots offered. This one supposed is reputed to root easily.
