Judging by the candles, I'd say they are probably ok, and that repot was barely more than a slip-pot. Bet the tree doesn't miss a beat.

LOL well I was going to say the same. I call these trees "hard boiled eggs". You can't screw them up! This specially in the hands of masters. And of course I am not taking anything away from Mr. Kobayashi and company. Incredible material and result.

Agreed, he's one of the best. His book should be required library material for any bonsai library, really inspirational.

During the Tuesday Mirai live, Ryan did talk about some of the work being done at the wrong time of the year.
 
Anyone know what is going on at the 5:50 mark where the guy on the right is hammering the roots?

It looks like Kobayashi is placing bamboo sticks into the root ball to act as anchor points for wiring into the pot.
If you can find Yoshimura's book you will see the technique detailed in the section on transplanting.
