Style & repot of a giant Pine.
Judging by the candles, I'd say they are probably ok, and that repot was barely more than a slip-pot. Bet the tree doesn't miss a beat.I wonder if they mentioned this is not the time of year to perform a job like this.
Look how easy that is when you have killer material, 6 apprentices, Peter Warren, and time-lapse filming!
Agreed, he's one of the best. His book should be required library material for any bonsai library, really inspirational. And of course I am not taking anything away from Mr. Kobayashi and company. Incredible material and result.
As I was watching, and really enjoying it, I was thinking about how nice it would be to have helpers to do the dirty work.Look how easy that is when you have killer material, 6 apprentices, Peter Warren, and time-lapse filming!
Gift from Peter, really nice of him:

This book kicked off my infatuation with bonsai pots.
I wonder if they mentioned this is not the time of year to perform a job like this.
It looks like Kobayashi is placing bamboo sticks into the root ball to act as anchor points for wiring into the pot.Anyone know what is going on at the 5:50 mark where the guy on the right is hammering the roots?

If you can find Yoshimura's book you will see the technique detailed in the section on transplanting. It looks like Kobayashi is placing bamboo sticks into the root ball to act as anchor points for wiring into the pot.
