Kiyohime maple

This is a tree I won in a one question contest over on FB, years ago from M. Comstock as a stick in a pot. It has been a fun thing to grow out, it's starting to shape up a bit. I don't have any real old photos as I didn't photograph raw sticks then. But I found one from early on. Just repotted recently in an oval, I may go back to the wide pot next year.

Kiyohime are definitely an under appreciated tree for bonsai. The spring foliage is gorgeous with each tiny leaf outlined in red. Yours is a fantastic example!

I like where it’s headed, but a long way to go up top! I saw one on FB from Mai bonsai, that was spectacular!

I’m just starting the journey with mine. It’s an air layer I took in 2023. Hopefully one day it will be a mother daughter kinda thing lol

Reminds me of mine, which I got as a young cutting from Brent Walston over 10 years ago. They are really beautiful little trees.

yeah, and with really no effort from me, just putting a maple into a super shallow pot makes them do it naturally.

It seemed like his developed from the stage I'm at, to that amazing degree of perfection in such a short period of time! Wonder how that happened, I need that magic!

Well they certainly don't have a longer growing season across the pond. So you've that going for ya. Maybe they/ cultivar just hits a honeyhole point. No clue.

I love my Kiyohimes. They are almost automatic bonsai with short internodes and small leaves. I've got a couple I developed from pre bonsai from Ed Clark.
