Not to worry I am not going to take a random juniper and start peeling bark. However I was wondering just for my notebook if there are general rules when creating spiral shari on junipers. I know it is done in phases a bit further and wider each year, but with respect to where it begins and when drawn out with chalk where it should end up on a bend, such as outside or inside the curve, those such things. Thanks always,
pete

There is no general fast and easy rules...if you want to do it right. Each tree will need a different treatment to bring it's best. Sorry.

Shari generally follows the flow of the trunk. Also, yes, it is usually done in stages. It is good to chalk it out first. Also, I sometimes use virts. I will take a pic of the tree and then photo shop the shari. When I come up with something I like, it is then a matter of physically assessing how much live tissue needs to be removed. Sometimes most of the area is already dead so more carving can be done. Other times, you are creating live veins. If this is the case, since live tissue needs to be removed, it needs to be done in stages.
