Funny, after saying I didn't want a Juniper right now, I ended up with one today.

I went to a local nursery and browsed around, then I spotted normal tree stock of this Juniper. The price was just too tempting (I paid very little for this beauty!) so, here we are. My Juniper journey begins!

Right now I did the least to it as possible. I removed the nursery soil, lightly trimmed a few longer roots and then cut off roots that were too high up on the trunk. Since it is the last month of autumn where I am, I can leave it alone until spring and in that time, I can do my research. I like a semi cascade style, will let it grow and see what to do come the new growing season.

There are some excellent Procumbens threads here that cover development. I have two which I just collected last year and are growing well now. @leatherback has a great video on procumbens and other needle-type* juniper care. Its a great starting spot.

*not going into whether procumbens get scale foliage or not... lol...

Very cool. Near me they’re all bonsai section at this size and cost an arm an a leg 🤷‍♂️

The price here for this Juniper, if I bought it from a bonsai nursery, is a lot more! I would feel more comfortable paying if I was more experienced, but as a beginner it seems crazy to spend a lot per bonsai when things can go wrong as I learn.

Fantastic, thank you Orion!

I've been watching a lot of videos on Juniper Procumbens, and I have to be honest, I'm falling in love with this variety. They just really appeal to me in looks and working with them. Funny how one can have their mind changed so quickly! I did read they are an easier type to care for, but besides that, a very attractive tree indeed.
