Just make sure that you give that growth light and let it run, dont cut back to it immediately expecting it to take over as a deciduous tree's leader would. You can reduce slowly one you see it running.
I like Brian's virt in general. I wohldnt worry about having a thick low branch. Once set, and let grow, especially the apex, that low branch will not significantly thicken at the same rate as the rest of the tree.
