Reports are that Jim Smith passed last night (06/29/2016). A true giant of American Bonsai. Rest in Peace Jim. Let's share stories, pictures, trees and the like on this thread. 2016 is turning out to be a rough year for legends... :(

Jim's lantana bonsai, eleventh down in this gallery of his work, is the best lantana bonsai I have ever seen. It was featured in the book Outstanding American Bonsai. I believe that it was one of the trees that he donated to the National Arboretum but died in their care. The picture of it in the gallery is not that great. The picture in the book Outstanding American Bonsai is better.

Can anyone confirm or provide additional details of the history of this lantana bonsai?

Service will be at Heathcote Botanical Gardens, either July 17th or July 24th.

No. Not here.
I have made threads. They were flamed.

Oh man up and stop feeling sorry for yourself. You flamed other threads to. Call it quits and do the right thing. This is about Jim....
I heard so much about the big man, but really know waaay to little. I'm sure its the same with many others. If you have something to share towards his memory and legacy then please do so.

My teacher just died. Piss off.
I dont owe this forum anything.

I posted when the service is. Hope to see you there.

Living in Iowa I knew nothing of ficus when I first started learning about them a quick internet search took me to a page that told his story and the willow leaf ficus was ordered soon after.
I fell in love with this tree after learning basic care.
There was a time when many of his trees were being sold online- about 30 pages full of his works.
I studied those pages for hours at a time and months of looking at them. Then one day the site didn't work anymore. I wish I would've saved all those pictures. His style was very distinct. Very natural looking.
It's funny the peoples lives you touch without even knowing it.
I am thankful for his work and accomplishments.
Seth I am sorry for your loss
My heart and prayers go out to everyone who was touched by his works.

There are several very nice profiles online currently.
One on art of bonsai
One on Adamaskwhy
I cannot find a photo of my favorite right now but it was a green island ficus over a Cyprus knee I believe.
The work is just very well done.
Impressive trees!
I wish so much there was a central collection of photos of all of his trees to view.
A book maybe or online.
I would pay for access to view those maybe an ebook??

Seth I really appreciate the photos you have shared in other posts.
I think you handled it very well and you helped ME to understand that you will continue to care for these in the way the artist had intended.
Thank you for that!

Jim Smith was one of the first Bonsai artists I ever heard of when I first dipped my toe in the hobby back in the 1990's. By no means a lover of tropical bonsai, his bonsai creations, and his willow leaf ficus bonsai in particular for me, were simply awesome. What an amazing legacy he has left. My condolences to his family and those lucky enough to have known him personally.
