JBP seedling/cutting growers competition(Mark Comstock)

I'm in, I started a half pound of red and a half pound of Black on January 13. As usual I procured decent seed from Schumacher. Put seeds in a bowl and poured hot water from a coffee maker over them, let them sit over night and planted the next morning. I planted them in milled sphagnum and wrapped the trays with saran and placed on 75 degree bottom heat in a 40 degree minimum temperature greenhouse covered inwhite poly. I will start anothe 1/2 pound of each in 1 month.
I look forward to this, the more tests and trials, and tweaked techniques will result in knowledge for all.

Thanks for joining. I think a lot of us might tweak there knowledge. Being a huge fan i followed the posts on fb as well. If i recall correct the seedlings will sprout in your sphagnum mix. You let them grow until old enough and then perform the seedling cutting? Is this correct? Time saver.

I assume the screen is for critter protection. Rats? Squirrels? Birds?

I will be growing mine in a plexy cold frame with bottom heat - primarily because last time the birds ravaged my seedlings.

100% milled sphagnum? In the photos it looks darker but that may just be the water/humidity.

The mice are really hungry in January, last year I lost 1lb of black pine seeds in trays due to mice, then once they sprout they mow them down as well,,,,yes the sphagnum is wet, not ideal for milling,,,,

been busy sticking jbp, jrp and yes I have a technique for JWP that is working really well. I have done close to 3500 jbp and almost as many jrp. This is what im coming up with. Ive got it down to where I can put 360 degrees roots with no gaps on everyone that I take m y time with, by take my time im talking about 20 seconds per cutting, when you do many thousands that time adds up quickly. Im happier with my quality this year than I was last year when I first di large production with this technique. Ive tweeked it a little further this year and the results show it. in the photos below you can see a regular uncut seedling next to a seedling cutting. I went from that skinny seedling to a squat fat 360 degree radial root wearing little beast. Im still doing first cut cuttings and im continuing on my second cuts,,,,,,,,,,

Those seem really fat! Wow. second cuttings i guess. Maybe i could try that with a few of mine.

Did second cutting on mine yesterday. Not sure if I can provide them with the right humidity. For the short one, did you cut short the fist cutting cycle and recut at approximately the same level. Or does the location of the initial cut does not matter that much? Seen these pics on FB before, you keep amazing everybody... Tx for sharing.

I have told people most of what im doing, but there are a lot of aspects I wont tell anyone. y'all can figure it out though im sure. ther are so many ways to poke and prod these cuttings, and everytime I poke them a little different than before I get a new result.

look at my cuttings, there is no stem

Mark, I’m going to need some of your JWP seefling cuttings. I’m rehabbing an old Kokonoe grafted on JBP, and I want to graft on new JWP roots to replace the JBP roots.

Cutting roots, organizing and potting, in a minimum 40 degree clear poly house, I’ll get them growing nicely by mid January so I can keep up with the California guys
