I really enjoy the gamble. I already see big variation between seedlings with just the 30 or so I ran as a trial. One thing I really want to find is a JRP/Scots pine hybrid. Apparently they are closer related to each other than they are to JBP. This also makes me wonder why scots pine is not a double flush pine?JBP is known to hybridize with JRP where they grow near each other so there's a good chance you will have some hybrid seedlings. Only time will tell.
I'll be interested to see what sort of trees you get from those seedlings.
Don't expect every hybrid t be the same. It's a lottery as to which genes each seed gets from each parent so there could be a whole range of charcateristics but it sounds like you may be aware of that and looking forward to the possible different types.
Does the root end up growing under the wool or through it?I'm feverishly hunting down weird genetics in pine trees. Mostly searching for lone trees surrounded by the other species, hoping to find a hybrid between JBP and JRP. I found this tree surrounded by both species. Here's the tree, the seeds, and the seedlings.View attachment 481631View attachment 481632View attachment 481633View attachment 481629View attachment 481634
So initially you have the seed in the wool block and in container with water? Once the tap root dies off you then add soil?View attachment 481854
It grows through it and air prunes the taproot. Then, I put them in soil after the tip of the tap root dies off.
I would say the best thing to do is remove all the material above the seed and put sand on top. That way the seed pops out with no issues. Otherwise, I just water it gently when it gets dry.So initially you have the seed in the wool block and in container with water? Once the tap root dies off you then add soil?
