JBP cold hardy cultivar?

I am in zone five and would like to grow JBP - wondering if there is more cold hardy cultivar. I have a friend who is more coastal than me, also zone 5 who has grown mikawa but has issues with branch die back. Another friend who has been growing Japanese garden trees for over 50 years said you can’t grow jbp in New Hampshire.

Just need a little extra protection, particularly wind protection if the roots freeze. Honestly, I keep them on metal racks on the porch. Seen sub-zero on many occasions.
