Hi everyone, my maple is coming into leaf this spring and I noticed an odd bud. As it’s progressing I’ve realised it’s a flower. I didn’t know this occurred in maples, but I did some research and it does, though I can find only a little information about it and not much in the bonsai space. Thought I’d share!

Yes I suppose I never thought they were so visible! I am red/green colourblind so perhaps I just never noticed them on larger specimens and this is the first maple in my collection so can view in detail. Thanks for clarifying

Maple flowers are usually insignificant and hidden among the lovely opening spring leaves so we don't usually notice them. The bees do notice, however, and the maples in our garden hum with bees while the flowers are open.
JM flowers develop at the tips of short twigs. In bonsai we are usually trimming twigs as they extend so we remove most flower buds well before they develop. My older JM bonsai now extend less so less trimming and they now produce flowers and seed on the shorter twigs most years.

That they can. This year this one put on a big show.

If you care to see it outside of 2D still images. The direct link permits all ...even without an account to view just the one link. You won't be able to open anything else on my page. But you will be able to see this.

Beautiful. I really had no idea. Thanks for sharing. This is only my second season with this tree and first maple so it’s news to me! I will post updates here.

My tree will probably need a harder prune at some point soon but I’m conscious that it’s still acclimatising - want some vigour first

Here’s a couple of pictures of it further along!
