I looked at my big gree Japanese maple yesterday and it looked fine. I looked at it today and all the leaves are turning brown and curling up. What is going on with this thing?!?!?image.jpgimage.jpg

Any recent changes in watering, fertilizer, spraying for critters or fungus. Has the temperature skyrocketed? Too much sun? Was there any physical damage to the plant? Uprooting?

If nothing has changed, I can only think Verticillum wilt or Phytophthora; There's no cure for either.

I bought it about 2 weeks ago from the nursery, I wrapped it in plastic while I took it home and went no faster than 35. I live in a rainforest so I typically dont water my trees but it just rained yesterday. The temp has been NL higher than prob 90 at the most. I removed the pine straw from the top of the pot and replaced it with soil, gave it a small ammount of fertilizer and that was that. But it was almost 2 weeks ago that I gave it fertilizer and it was only a small handfull too little to burn it. Idk but I dont like it. I've had it in partial shade getting morning sun and evening shade. It was getting more sun at the nursery but I dont see how that would harm the tree.

I've seen healthy trees in nurseries do this and am not sure why, but it does look frighteningly like what happens when the xylem gets plugged by a fungus, say.

I suggest that you take a deep breath and relax for a little while (after letting the seller know what has happened). As long as the axillary buds are alive and well, it will come back. There is an axillary bud at the base of every leaf petiole - the petiole base sorta cups around the outside of it. They will turn dark brown to black over the next few weeks if your tree is dead. Generally they will enlarge and become a brighter color (usually red) if they are alive and your tree really is okay.

I've got a 10 foot tall Higasayama JM in my yard that 'flamed out' like this at the nursery where I bought it several years ago. I, however, had the luxury of seeing it come back later in that summer before I bought it.

After inspecting and testing the soil I found that it was on the dry side, how this is possible after a whole night of rain I have no idea but I watered it and its been raining steadily since. I've never seen a tree go straight from heathy to brown overnight. I check my trees every day looking for dropping leaves and dry soil and I found no sign of either the day before. Hopefully it was just thirsty and now that its thirst has been quenched hopefully it'll start recovering, just in case I'm going to give the nursery a call.

Looks like it got dried out. If it is a big tree in a pot, it is probably root bound and in need of an up pot, planing in the ground... What are your plans for it?

These maples can be susceptible to wind burn as well. I would expect that more in an open, dry area not the type of climate you described...
