Koto Hime Spring 2017 004.JPG Heavy rain and frost on the way so I brought a couple of my Bonsai inside

Here is my 7 1/2 year old Koto Hime, I have been Pruning, Styling(Classic Formal Upright) for 2 1/2 years, I keep in the garage during the Winter...
Out of 20 Maples this Koto Hime shows the most leaf development and color, it measures 11" H from the soil and 11" W Canopy, the trunk measures 3/4" Tk...

Very nice-looking cultivar, but the shoot at the base of the first branch on the left that crosses the trunk on the right looks a bit odd...
Agreed... Especially if formal upright is your goal here, I'd remove that crossing branch...
these root rather well from cuttings too. JFTR...

If removing anything....

It would be the straight up one...

Then an angle change could complete the non crossyness.

Also...

Rans!

Whatever the hell that means!
I still haven't it fully figured!

Sorce

OMG...I cant be cutting any branches off this tree, it is a Classic Beauty just as is ....I just will not consider it a Formal Upright any longer, just an everyday Koto Hime...
Its hard to believe the leaves will turn Green in a couple weeks...
Thanks for all the comments tho...

Well, that branch crossing from the left side of the tree over to the right side negates any "Classic Beauty" the tree has.

That's a Major Fault. For any style of tree.

So, perhaps a different front may offer a better view?

(Even if placed in the back, that fault would disqualify the tree as being considered being a good Formal Upright).

You need to work on getting this tree to backbud more secondary branches closer to the trunk.

Good luck with it!

Adair and others, thanks for pointing out the peculiarities of the branching of this Koto Hime...

Here is the tree from last November and at a different angle, the branch that appears to be crossing over the trunk from left to right is actually coming off the center of the trunk,,,

If I remove the branch that appears to be crossing the trunk it still leaves another branch and coming off the center again...

If I remove the entire centered branch it would take away 80% of the right side foliage...

I think I will re-arrange its position in the pot by rotating about 45 degrees right & do some creative wiring...

Koto-Hime is back......
Top Koto is 5 days after the bottom Koto picture & hard to believe...
Top is considered Light green, Bottom is considered Pink Rose(from Koto Hime research)...
Both pictures taken in April 2017...

Yes, you have a very challenging tree.

Where can i get one in the US? Can’t seem to find it anywhere
Bill valavanis sells them in his seedling catalogue from international bonsai every spring. They were much smaller this year, but they are normally a very good size
