Bought 3 small Japanese larch group plantings which I intend on potting into one group next spring. They were delivered last week and quite a few needles on two of them are yellow (see photo). I've never worked with Japanese Larch before, would appreciate thoughts on a) causes and b) how worried I need to be.

Thanks!

It is probably a result of shipping. Acclimate them to full sun. It may take a week to do this, possibly longer. They have to be outside. Don't let them get toasty dry but don't keep them sopping wet.

Thanks both

@Bnana - I think in a dark box 2 or 3 days.

Sorry @penumbra - when you say acclimate them to full sun I assume you mean ease them into it gently rather than giving them full sun all day?

It probably is because of the shipping than. Indeed be careful in the beginning, morning and late sun only. But should be happy pretty soon.
Than it can handle full sun as long as they do not dry out.

Were they in the ceramic pots as in the photo or did you repot them? I have 15 of these and those that were in full sun after being repotted suffered similar needle color change and I am afraid one may not survive. So be careful moving them into the sun too fast and don’t let them dry out.

@Cofga They were already in those pots, haven’t repotted them. Will make sure they only get gentle sun for couple of weeks. Thanks!

They don't call them Golden Larch for nothin'. Seems to me they emerge a lighter color and evolve darker and yellow up again in autumn. Partial shade is welcome.

That's a different species, Pseudolarix amabilis. Japanese Larch is Larix kaempferi.
Good call. I knew there was something about the comment but I was feeling a bit brain dead when I read it and passed on it. Thanks for keeping us straight.
