Itoigawa shimpaku...mame size

The apex needs to fill out a little...but, I'm really thinking this is worth the risk of attempting to "not kill". Yes, I'm allergic...but, with gloves on...it's so tiny 5" tall x 6" wide and .75" trunk. That it shouldn't reach my arms...to bother me.

Nice little tree. Do you already own it, or are you thinking of purchasing it? I'd happily take it (price dependent, of course).

Are you actually allergic to simple contact with these? I react to procumbens but it's more from the constant little jabs from the sharp needles. I don't have any problem with shimpaku.

Thanks it definitely caught my eye...

The juniper I had for the contest was a blue rug maybe...I forget. I got pieces of it in my finger. And it was horrid clearing up. But, yes...when I touched it I had skin issues. But, having it in my finger like a thorn only contributed to a nasty swollen, seeping mess. It would clear up only to break open and start all over again. I've not dealt with shimpaku though...

In the process of a purchase...just waiting for final information to send payment. But, thanks...yes...this little guy has me at least giving it a shot. Within my price range of willing to give it a go.

Well...I gently handled the foliage...not really working it though. And found no ill effects by just touching it. Which...I am extremely happy about. Since I absolutely LOVE the tree!

I thought about doing that Jim...but once gone I can't get it back. If the foliage is grown out...I can have the tip of that jin poke out from it. So I will hold off. If it doesn't pan out..then stub it will become.

I wish I could take the credit for that one...for I too was on the same line of thought as Jim. But, had been speaking with Vance. I thought I seen a Mugo with potential...but, was to gunshy to make the purchase and kill it. I wasn't willing to lose that much money...though it wasn't out of the ballpark...but, more than I cared to lose. I had discussed with him the Jin that was mentioned. He suggested I let the tree grow out a bit before making rash decisions. Suggested I do some google images...which I can see now, if that area grows out...I can have Jin poking out the foliage verses seeing the entire piece of Jin. Which might look rather sweet. So...I'm holding off on doing anything other than horticultural care.

But, I do see many more junipers in my collection...either shimpaku or Kishu...if I can get this one through winter and into the following season. If I can have horticultural success...it will open up another avenue for me. And I see a shelf of conifers in my future.

Thanks Judy...now, I've not worked it...but touching it's foliage has not given me any sort of skin irritation as of yet. So I am quite hopeful. Because in the past...junipers and I didn't mix well together.

I got a couple last year Darlene. I left mine right outside up here last winter. They pulled through excellently.
I also want more.
The foliage on these is a lot different than the procumbens nana isn't it? Not prickly at all. No rashes.
Plus once you see one in person you know why they are at the top of the juniper heap for bonsai.

Healthy! I am hoping to get a photo soon of the 26 we spoke of. Of course they are just little but there is some Itoigawa in the mix You should be pleased with this one and even more with the ease of care!
