Weā€™re out at the coast & I went to check out the local nursery and found this. My app said cryptomeria japonica? Japanese Cedar? The workers had no clue, it was the only one & had no tag. Some of the weird growth on thisā€¦..it looks kinda like ocean coral to me in the first picture- is this normal??? Because I love itā€¦šŸ¤£

Thanks for any info šŸ™‚

The odd shaped growth is called 'fasciation'. Not normal but also not rare. I have a JBP in the garden with some fasciation. Now that the tree is bigger the fasciation appears to be disappearing from new shoots.
I've read lots of theories about why it occurs but have not been able to find enough common ground to be sure.
In some species growth like this is propagated and encouraged to produce what is known as 'monstrose' plants with weird growth all over - search for monstrose cacti varieties.

Cryptomeria is a very strong possibility for the ID but there are many conifers that look similar.
Personally I'd pass on this but if you like it go ahead.

Thatā€™s a cultivar of Cryptomeri. They sell them at nurseries around here too. Iā€™ve been looking for just a regular Cryptomeria, but all anyone is selling is the cultivars.

Thanks for all the info, much appreciated! Yes I liked the weird ā€œfasciationā€ part so I bought it - it was cheap so i thought what the heck itā€™ll be fun to play with šŸ˜ Thanks guys

It's called sekka-sugi in Japan.

Just like how the sekka-hinoki is considered a varient of the dwarf hinoki variety, this is the sugi version.

They pop up occassionally on the auction sites, but I've never seen a convincing bonsai, nor a full grown tree.

Click the link for pictures.

Cool thank you guys.

Yes @Arnold that is it isn't it? Thank you. I saw the same type of pictures for the "cristata" after @Shibui gave me the terms to search online.

@Yamabudoudanshi thank you so much for the link of all those pictures - that's great & now having the Japanese name - thank you.

I know this tree will be a challenge but I'm sure it's my newness to the hobby that gives me the optimism to try :D I'm really looking for to getting back home in a couple days and figuring out what to do with this :D

There are one more Cryptomeria Japonica cultivar that have this kind of growth which is called a fascination.
The 'Cristata' cultivar only have fascination on a few new branch.
The 'Serana' cultivar is claimed to have it on all of its new branches.
