Is this a standard Green Japanese Maple?

So I want to get local seed for growing over the winter…….I do like this specimen,as it is very old ,but in wonderful health AND in full souther exposure here in my home town.
I noticed many of the leaf petioles were approaching 4” long…..mainly the drooping branches in the shaded undercanopy areas.Is this out of the ordinary? or do you think all Japanese mature maple may have long petioles?

Doing alot of this …….collecting local Trident seed and Zelkova too…….Thats how its done!!!

I dont think 9 lobed leaves are the norm for JM
If youre aiming for bonsai, those leaves are quite large. Seeds wont be clones but there will be a tendency towards the known parent in characteristics
Also I think there is a chance its not a Palmatum but a related species, or a hybrid
Reminds me of pseudosiboldianum

This is a fairly mature JM at Herons and the leaves are mostly 5 lobed. I would not use seeds from greater than 7 lobed. (There is a good corelation between lobe count and leaf size)

Oh I see…….The durability of the leaves is what atrracks me……..Yes, like a different family of Japanese Maple.

Probably not palmatum, however, there is a ton of seedling variation in the species.
Rather looks like a Full Moon Maple.

I just went and looked at about 60 JM seedlings and about 30 cultivars and all of them had 5 lobes with an occasional leaf showing 7 lobes.
Except my 'Sister Ghost' JM has mostly 7 lobes and a few 5 lobed leaves.

This one looks more basic and proper petiole length.The first bigger one has petioles twice as long or more……..the first may be a fun experiment though.

I’m kinda’ diggin’ the powerful look of the first one!
Maybe a perfect candidate for co2 fertilization!!!
Just like growing a Full Moon maple.

And then there's the full moon in the sky but it isn't a maple.

You can only plant full moon jm seeds just before full moon, otherwise they will be short a leaflet.

Its cool though….I will grow and see the variation and look of the seedlings……could be very different seedlings.

I think this is a great new opportunity for you, just put up the photos of those leaves and that trunk and your healthy seedlings and they will sell sell sell! If you plant now, when are they ready?

We’ll see you last time I had a bad batch of seed or something and all the Japanese maples got mildew at the seedling stage ,just the Japanese maples it was so weird so this year I’m thinking some zerotak or some hydrogen peroxide a very good fungicide I’m not in the powdery creamy white fungicides…… they need started in really low light too.

I’m gonna give them a shot overwinter along with Coreana hornbeam and Turczanowii Hornbeam some local trident Maple and Zelkova.

I still think it is more of a shirasawanum. The lobes are too separated to be a full moon. That link is definitely cool.

I soak my seeds in 50/50 H2O / H2O2 mix and the stratifying media as well.
I used to have seeds mildew or fungus, but no more.
