Is Ezo spruce particularly sensitive to sunlight?

I have a bunch of these seedlings and they're all showing signs of sunburn, I've put them in a more shaded position for now. Just wondering if it's to be expected or not. Thanks!

Agree with above. Sunburn almost always occurs on the top or outer edges where sun is strongest. There can be other causes for oldest needles to die but most usual is natural senescence which usually means nothing we can do to prevent this.

The answer is Ezo spruces can handle full Sun, but not extreme heat. When above 30C put in half shade.

Also moss the surface of the media really thick and water well. This will be similar to Ezo natural habitat.

Direct sunlight is essential for Ezo and most all conifers. As said heat is a problem with Ezo spruce. They grow in exposed sites in pretty rugged areas, but areas cold to temperate, so hot roots aren't a friend.
